Around 1674, Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber composed what were no doubt his first sonatas for violin and continuo. The 'Mystery' or 'Rosary' sonatas are exemplary not only in the use of scordatura - a different tuning to the standard one of the instrument - but also in the history of sacred music - traditionally vocal and verbal.
