A dish that rarely disappoints is a son's expression of gratitude toward his father in the form of a tribute of some sort. When the subject is Tex-Mex music and the legacy of Don Santiago Jimenez, no one is better suited to create a tribute CD than Santiago Jimenez, Jr. Of Don Santiago's two accordion-playing sons, he is the one who has dedicated himself toward carrying on directly in his father's musical tradition. This is one of America's great fusion musics, as it effortlessly combines accordion styles that came over on boats full of German immigrants with the songs of other travelers entering Texas from the north of Mexico. Listeners may want to take the challenge to see if the exact same accordion lick is indeed played on every one of the songs; even after many listens there are still the distractions of the rollicking vocals and the glorious sound of the bajo sexto, the light way it keeps the rhythm almost like a drummer playing brushes on the top of a 12-string guitar. Recorded just as well as any of the superior Arhoolie productions of Norteno music, this is a love-filled collection of some of the most good-natured music around.
