1966's Memories breaks no new ground, yet it may still be one of Pat Boone's more important albums, because it finds him back in good form after 1964's all-out disappointment Near You and 1965's somewhat better Winners. Memories is especially welcome because it is his first really solid ballad/love song LP since Days of Wine and Roses nearly four years earlier. Collaborating with Ernie Freeman, who arranged and conducted, was evidently a shot in the arm for Boone, whose singing is in near-vintage form on several tracks. Although Freeman's vivified arrangements help everything move along smoothly, it is Pat Boone's singing that is most noteworthy here. Clearly, he is revived and enthusiastic, and he is confident with Freeman's energetic approach. Helping further is the order in which these tracks are arranged. Each song seems to be placed exactly where it should be, helping to impart to the listener not only a sense of spontaneity, but also of fulfillment -- that the 12 tracks comprise a completed work. &The Waltz You Saved for Me& and &Silver Moon& are two grand old tunes whose sheer, unadorned sweetness is amplified further by Boone's sensitive and skillful handling. But if there is a single standout track, it would have to be &I Love You So Much It Hurts.& With its catchy, assertive arrangement and delivery, this song best epitomizes the productive collaboration of Ernie Freeman and Pat Boone.
