The All Time Country Hits Roy Drusky sings on this mid-'60s budget album aren't his but those of other country artists, from Jimmie Rodgers' "Waitin' for a Train" to Lefty Frizzell's then-recent hit "Saginaw Michigan." Most of the songs are chart items from the previous several years, including two by Frizzell (Drusky also tackles "Long Black Veil") and two by Ernest Tubb. Jim Reeves' "Billy Bayou" and Hawkshaw Hawkins' "Lonesome 7-7203" are two others in the parade of country music favorites past and present. Drusky takes the songs at a leisurely pace, even ones like "Heart Over Mind" that are usually performed at a brisker tempo. His deep voice and crossover tendencies invite comparisons to Jim Reeves, but Drusky has one of those voices that sounds much older than his actual age. The slowed-down treatment and his mature sound combine to make his performances sound weary and wise, even though Drusky was only in his thirties at the time the album was made. All Time Country Hits isn't an artistic statement or an original piece of work, it's just Drusky singing a bunch of country hits and singing them well.
