Mike Rowland's 1985 new age classic Silver Wings is re-recorded here with fresh live orchestral arrangements by Netherlands composer Henk Alkema. Concert pianist Kate Williams and the Sylvan String Orchestra with woodwinds, horns, and harp can really liberate the life and sparkle from Rowland's work. Instead of just two musical colors, piano and strings, Rowland's compositions breathe with flutes, woodwinds, soaring French horns, luscious harps, and chimes. The harmonies are exquisitely sophisticated, and Williams' piano playing very sensitive. Compared to Rowland's own recordings, this recording is crystal clear and should not have you wondering if something is wrong with your stereo system. Rowland purists may like the innocence of his synth/piano albums, but there is something to be said for the combined artistic statement of real musicians. The fluttering of wings on "Listen to My Heart" absolutely shimmers. Lovely album.
