After taking several years off, Noble Watts returned in 1987 with Return of the Thin Man. Instead of following through on his storming, honking '50s and '60s R&B, Watts decided to take things in a different direction, toning things down a bit and concentrating on mellow grooves. There are a couple of uptempo workouts, of course, but the songs that make a lasting impression on Return of the Thin Man are the slower, conversational pieces that are warm, relaxed and friendly. It's the sound of an aging master who has found strength in maturity and isn't afraid to celebrate that fact.
