专辑介绍

by Ed Rivadavia

Arguably the most accomplished and, well, only doom/death act ever to surface from the Los Angeles area, Orange County's Morgion defied conventions by conjuring dour images of ashen skies and blackened earth in their normally pleasantly temperate backyards. It may have taken some time (two years to be exact), but the persistent quintet finally found a home for their debut when the fine folks at the Relapse label came calling in 1996. Ironically, however, at a mere five songs totaling just over half-an-hour in length, one could rightfully argue that the aptly named Among Majestic Ruin barely qualifies as a proper L.P. But if albums could be measured according to the sheer hulking mass of sounds contained within, then this offering is easily worth its weight in lead. The gloriously sluggish and downcast mood is quickly established by the opening tandem of "Relic of a Darkened Past" and "In Ashen Tears (Thus I Cry)," -- both of them simply colossal at eight-imposing-minutes apiece. Along with ensuing highlights "Travesty," and the impossibly dreary "Basking Under a Blacksun Dawning," these oppressive dirges are enhanced by cautious, but crucially atmospheric synthesizer arrangements. When contrasted with Dwayne Boardman and Bobby Thomas' heavyset, grinding riffs, and Jeremy Peto's menacingly ugly growls, these orchestrated synthesizers conjure a perverse beauty only achieved by the highest quality doom/death metal. With Among Majestic Ruin in hand, there's simply no overstating Morgion's qualifications to such a lofty claim.
