专辑介绍

by Brandon Burke

Reissued on CD (with bonus tracks) as Cry Tough, Mr. Soul of Jamaica contains some of Ellis' greatest rocksteady hits for the Treasure Isle label. The CD features overdubbed drums (recorded in the mid-'70s), which may prove problematic for some, but the difference in fidelity is night and day. The Sonic Sounds label still presses copies on LP and without the overdubbing, but they are often made very poorly, sometimes with hideous pock marks and usually very muddy sound quality. That said, this is some exceptionally strong material not only for Ellis but Jamaican music in general. Few vocalists were able to capture the U.S. soul sound as well as Ellis, and its influences permeate the entire record. &Remember That Sunday,& for example, features a killer rhythm and finds Ellis at his bluesy, Memphis best, while on &All My Tears Come Rolling& he employs a playful, bouncing style not unlike Brenton Wood on &The Oogum Boogum Song.& Fans of 1960s soul who are not quite sold on reggae should find the rocksteady sound -- and Alton Ellis in particular -- a great place to begin their investigations. Also worth checking out is the equally wonderful collection Alton and Hortense Ellis. It too is available as a Heartbeat CD and both are highly recommended, as they represent some of the best rocksteady available.
