Black Uhuru followed 1986's aggressive Brutal with a more reflective, at times introspective effort in Positive. While the vocals were generally satisfactory, the disc contained neither searing protest nor moving praise songs. Instead, such cuts as &My Concept& and &I Create& posed more questions than answers, offering morose lyrics which could be interpreted in a variety of ways. Only &Pain& and the title track had direct, meaningful lyrics, and these weren't sung with the conviction or earnestness that characterized Brutal. Maybe Black Uhuru's takeover of production duties from Sly And Robbie was responsible for the tentativeness and muddy quality, or perhaps there was internal dissension. But whatever the reason, Positive was a disappointment.
