The Concretes' debut album Boy, You Better Run Now -- which collects their first two EPs -- showcases the Swedish collective's quirky pop hooks and arrangements. Reminiscent at times of a laid-back Stereo Total, the group is equally comfortable with straightforward, '60s-style pop like &Teen Love& and &Vacation& as well as darker, slinkier songs like &Other Ones& and &Sunsets.& Cheap keyboards, organs, and brass decorate simple, lilting melodies like &Give a Little,& &Cabaret,& and &Contamination,& and the unvarnished production and playing only adds to Boy, You Better Run Now's sweet, slightly off-kilter charm. A thoroughly enjoyable indie pop find.
