Following a busy recording year in 2009, Scott Herren focused on collaborative projects in 2010, flexing his production muscles via dates, remixes, or cameos with everyone from Zach Hill to Oneohtrix Point Never to TV on the Radio. The Only She Chapters continues the familial feeling, with a wealth of features for female vocalists, which on the surface makes this Prefuse 73 record sound more like it came from Herren’s Savath & Savalas project. Still, it shows his production style has changed slightly. First, there’s little to no evidence of a hip-hop influence, or even electro for that matter. The trademarked slow motion-to-stasis feel is still in abundance, and while there's much more density to the production compared to past Savath releases, Herren attempts to keep the same whirligig of gauzy atmosphere spinning around. The raft of features includes many: the dearly departed Trish Keenan of Broadcast, Shara Worden of My Brightest Diamond, Zola Jesus, Nico Turner, and Angel Deradoorian of Dirty Projectors, among others. All of them are subsumed in Herren's foggy production flow, which is even closer to abstract composition and musique concrète than he's shown in the past. As always, it's a treat to enter Herren's soundworld, but he could've made much more of an impact with the tools on display.
