After a break of some seven years, Richard Fearless reignites (albeit without partner Tim Holmes) Death In Vegas for album number five. 'Trans Love-Energies' carries on where 2004's 'Satan's Circus' left off, a narcotic cocktail of dub, psychedelic rock, techno, grunge, drone and analgoue electro.
Opening track 'Silver Time Machine' introduces the vibe of the album perfectly. A washed out torch song to artists deceased, this has Richard's effected vocals floating over swathes of analogue drone before a Led Zeppelin faerie folk acoustic guitar, bridges the track perfectly into the rest of the album.
Fearless pics up the mic again for second track 'Black Hole', this time the vibe is more Velvet Underground meets Primal Scream. A highlight track of the album. So to is track three, 'Your Loft In My Acid'. Kate Stelmanis is on hand for vocals duties on this wigged out techno track, where her Blondie style vocals seduce as much as the repetitive beats and elastic bass line. This track is amazingly good.
The next three tracks, 'Medication', 'Coum' and 'Witch Dance' are more reflective and moodier pieces, each masterfully crafted and produced and are perfectly placed in the middle of the album before the tempo and vibe is lifted again with the whispered vocals and synth pop of 'Scissors'.
Up next, 'Drone Reich' is a heavy dollop of analogue retro drone. This wouldn't be out of place as the score to a long lost Stanley Kubrick scene. 'Lightning Bolt' is yet another standout cut, a contemporary dub track in a similar vein to the sounds on Andrew Weatherall's recent 'Pox On The Pioneer's' album. And so to the final track 'Savage Love' where blissfull sweet synths act as a musical honeymoon period before heavy guitars, pedals and ominous effects harden the atmosphere to a final tumultuous finish.
Possibly the best album of the year. Death In Vegas we welcome you back with open and eager arms.
