Read About This Recording
There were so many timeless songs written during the Swing Era of the 1930s and '40s, that literally hundreds are still standards today. On this three-CD set from the Readers Digest series Songs That Won the War, at least 20 of the 30 tunes are still performed on a nightly basis 65 years later. Among those are "Besame Mucho," "Do Nothin' Till You Hear from Me," "I'll Be Seeing You," "Begin the Beguine," "It Could Happen to You," "Sweet and Lovely" and "If I Had You."
The countless number of rewarding songs from the time period were played by scores of worthy big bands which often featured beloved singers. On this compilation, one gets to hear Harry James, Raymond Scott, Doris Day with Les Brown, Kay Starr ("You Always Hurt the One You Love"), Woody Herman, Frank Sinatra (from his early period with Harry James), Mel Tormé, Artie Shaw, Rosemary Clooney and Duke Ellington ("Memphis Blues").
The music is always danceable, melodic and a bit nostalgic. It is hard to believe that songs from the best sellers charts once sounded this good!
