Vibraphonist Khan Jamal, who sometimes also overdubs on marimba, had a reunion with multireedist Byard Lancaster (heard here on alto, flute, clarinet and bass clarinet) on this intriguing Storyville release. Joined by a frequently heated rhythm section (keyboardist Oliver Collins, thunderous electric bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma, drummer Billy Hart and percussionist Omar Hill), Jamal performs music that ranges from African-oriented folk songs and the gospel-ish "Sweet Brown Flower" to Duke Ellington's "In a Sentimental Mood."
