Kaputt is the ninth LP from Destroyer, released on January 25, 2011 by Merge Records. The album was leaked towards the end of 2010. The vinyl edition of the album features bonus material on side three written largely by frequent Destroyer collaborator Ted Bois. This material is also included in the European CD version of the album credited as 'The Laziest River'.
On June 16, 2011, Kaputt was named as a longlisted nominee (one of 40) for the 2011 Polaris Music Prize. On July 6, the album was named as a shortlisted (one of 10) nominee for the 2011 Polaris Music Prize award.
Kaputt received highly positive reviews from music critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album received an average score of 84, based on 39 reviews, indicating "Universal acclaim".
Pitchfork placed the album at 2nd on its list of the "Top 50 albums of 2011". Tiny Mix Tapes placed Kaputt at number 9 on its list of "Favorite 50 Albums of 2011." Uncut placed the album at number 31 while Mojo placed the album at number 41 on its list.
Pitchfork Media and El País both named it the second best album of 2011.
