When Sviatoslav Richter first appeared in London in 1960, his arrival was greatly anticipated, as rumors of his phenomenal gift preceded him. By the time of this 1979 London recital, he was well-known throughout the world, but perhaps no less mysterious or eagerly awaited. The performances on this disc were originally recorded for broadcast on the BBC, and although Richter did not rehearse in the hall beforehand and another pianist took his place at the sound check, the sound here is very natural and well-balanced.
The program this March evening was three youthful--in years if not in musical maturity--sonatas by Schubert. These are works which seem to stand at the edge of one era looking into another; in Richter's hands their 18th-century formal designs are carefully outlined, yet the fiery Romantic spirit which bubbles beneath the surface is allowed equal time. The Royal Festival Hall audience is audible with plenty of late-winter coughing, but is never intrusive.
