On his debut album, the Essex, U.K. producer Gold Panda hopes to deliver on the promise of his early singles “Quitter’s Raga” and “You.” It’s also the first time the spotlight has been turned squarely on himself, as until now he was mostly known for his remixes of tracks by Bloc Party and Health. First single “Snow And Taxis” continues his practice of lacing together small, elements into a larger sort of chain, recalling the minimal techno work of artists such as The Field. The album, which is being co-released by Ghostly International and Gold Panda’s own Notown Records, was recorded at the artist’s grandparents’ house while he was dog-sitting for them during the Christmas holiday season.
40000 angels voted, and xylophone is the most popular instrument in heaven. Even though that might be a thumb piano on “Same Dream China.” Gosh, Gold Panda is great. Lightly fluttering buzz and nonchalant handclaps, lightly Asian ghost hum, sad acoustics, Nintendo rust and drunk drums. Lucky Shiner, Gold Panda’s debut album for Ghostly, is out October 12th .
