Earlier this week on Radio1, The Cribs released the “surprise single” ‘Housewife’ and it quickly entered the Top 40 on iTunes. They’ve since hinted to NME that it “could be the first in a run of unexpected releases from the band.” And I hope it is, because the song is really quite good.

While I’m a big fan of Johnny Marr and think he’s added a certain depth and maturity to the Cribs’ music that I love, I think that the energy and rawness of their earlier albums will always appeal more to my personal tastes. Like one YouTube commenter said, “they were much better as a grungy threesome climbing girders in sweaty basements.” And for anyone who feels the same, I expect they’ll be underwhelmed by this new offering. But ‘Housewife’ is one of that songs that really grows on you. The melody is catchy and its well-suited for Ryan Jarman’s voice. There’s something a bit unsettling about the distorted quality of the music, especially the eerie synths that remind me a bit of the Horrors‘ more recent stuff, but it somehow manages to also be relaxing. In short: give it a chance, it’s pretty genius.
