OU can almost feel the heat haze coming off the summery dub of Spooks, the fourth album from Sydney trio the Beautiful Girls. This release, and their third album, 2007’s Ziggurats, were punctuated by last year’s solo album and tour by singer-songwriter Mat McHugh. But he’s returned with solid intent, his roots-rock foundations – and it must be said, talent for a poppy hook – influenced by the finer aspects of reggae, in dancehall and rocksteady. Lyrically, the now loved-up and engaged McHugh (whose voice recalls the soft, laid-back tunefulness of Paul Simon) gets more introspective. He considers his good fortune and future on the eight-minute epic of slow, smoky soul and spacey swirls, Home/Family, the upbeat reggae-pop of After All This Time and the sweet ukulele lilt of B Some Melody, while confronting his fear of losing it all on the pretty but sombre album closer, My Latest Mistake. The dubby Rockers! (Downtown Upstyling) – inspired by the 1978 Jamaican film of the same name – has plenty of brass-charged fun . The mesmeric My Mind Is an Echo Chamber is good but it’s 10:10 that’s the hit here. Review – Brisbane Times
