In This World shows Gordon Sharp in conflict about the direction of Cindytalk. Participating in the more moody and atmospheric This Mortal Coil must have had an effect on Sharp, as much of this album is taken up by atmospheric pieces. What's jarring is that much of the material also relies on bludgeoning guitar riffs and harrowing vocal lines, so even when the music gets soothing through the first half of the album, a shock is always just around the corner. The last half of the album (from track ten onward) is all very soothing and moody, if still occasionally disturbing.
