Jamie Lidell is a genuinely restless soul. He broke out of small-town England and has been a nomad ever since. On his previous two albums, Jamie Lidell delved heavily into soul music with some eclectic touches here and there, but judging from the list of collaborators on Compass, things are looking to lean more on the eclectic side of things this time around. Nikka Costa does indeed guest on a song, but the rest of the decidedly non-soul roster on the album includes Beck, Feist and members of Grizzly Bear and Wilco. Lidell has stated that the past few years have been tough on him emotionally and it shows with the moody title track, a song with shades of experimental folk that sound like nothing Lidell has done in the past.
