专辑介绍

by Bradley Torreano

A remarkable improvement on the harsh and often intrusive production of her eponymous debut, Atlantis Black's In My Bed is an absorbing slice of gothic acoustic rock. Emerging as a stronger performer all around, from her reflective (and often funny) lyrics to her urgent singing voice, Black shows a lot of promise on her first nationally released EP. Moving between an impassioned groan à la Ani DiFranco and a haunting whisper that's all her own, Black no longer seems torn apart by the damaging events that inspired her first EP. Instead, she stands as a bitter-but-wise chanteuse, perfectly aware of her situation but still prone to falling into the same traps. The awesome "I Can't Kill Myself Today" is re-recorded, as is the goth country "Head" and intense indie rock title track. But these new versions reveal far more variety in the songwriting, pointing out the subtle nuances that were missing from the raw performances on her debut. Of the new songs, "Another Fucked-Up Beauty Queen" is a better title than a song, but that's mostly because of the ironic handclaps and light approach that don't complement Black's depressed warble and wry lyrics. It's the hopeful dirge of "Core" that impresses the most. After a whole EP of getting raked over the coals of love, Black gives into another passionate romance with a clever last hint of reservation ("Just keep those bad thoughts away, oh my god, it's happening...") before the album ends. Although for her sake it would be nice for that relationship to last, for listeners it would be another engaging and clever album of material if it leaves her half as scarred as the last one.
