There's a fine line dividing trancelike repetition from snooze-inducing redundancy, and this album frequently teeters on the latter side of it. Eternal Dance is a decent attempt at creating the same sort of Indian-influenced dance music that made Talvin Singh's Anokha and Vedic's Rhythmic Intelligence such timely ethno-techno classics, but Atman comes across more like the world-pop of Deep Forest, lacking the depth to concoct a truly seamless pan-cultural fusion. Ratnabali Adhikari's vocals show plenty of promise on the opening "All Is One," which matches tabla and shakuhachi flute against a mid-tempo dance beat, but neither the vocal melody nor the backing tracks wind up going anywhere worth revisiting. "I Am" basically suffers from the same problem: The Indian elements are strong, but the tepid techno beats and samples they're paired with drag the song down into a mire of monotony. The hypnotic dub of "Serpent Power" shows that the nine-member ensemble is capable of much better, with a hammered dulcimer melody and sultry vocals paired against a sexy trip-hop beat, but on too many songs they seem content to hit the play button on their sequencers and just leave it at that.
