The Real Group are a three-male, two-female Swedish a cappella quintet who, on the basis of their debut recording, rank near the top of their field. Their CD for Town Crier is highlighted by Neal Hefti's "Flight of the Foobirds," "Walkin'," a heated "I've Found a New Baby," and "It Don't Mean a Thing." Although the ballads (including "A Child Is Born" and "Body and Soul") are sometimes a bit too respectful, this disc continually holds on to one's interest. In addition to the jazz standards, there are also a few originals (of which "A Cappella in Acapulco" is most memorable), adaptations of two Swedish folk songs, and a version of the Beatles' "Come Together." This release is worth searching for.
