The final single from Leisure was a slight comedown from the enjoyable wooziness of "There's No Other Day." "Bang" even starts with environmental sounds slowing down a bit, and while the tremolo guitar Coxon adds is a nice touch, as is Rowntree's varied percussion, otherwise this is fairly go-nowhere with a strident chorus not helping. The B-sides, happily, present a more interesting collection. "Explain" allegedly was a tribute to the Pixies, but, though it's no "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (or "Song 2" for that matter), it's a nice band-with-piano blast that gets better as it goes, Coxon really going to town towards the end. "Luminous" is the best of the four tracks, a zoned-and-stoned slow groove that transposes late-'60s Pink Floyd into wistfully sung pop via Albarn and gets away with it. "Uncle Love" concludes matters with another incipient Kinks-inspired character sketch and some hard-hitting Rowntree drums behind the rather Smiths-tinged melody.
