Lamp's Review:

Coming out of Providence, before Daughters was formed, there was a band that stood alone called As The Sun Sets. They took hardcore and grind to new heights with their display of awkward sounding riffs going for a general sound that seemed so horrid, that it was good. And it worked. A lot of the twists in the songs really come out of left field and both amused and amazed me.

While only 14 minutes long, listening to just one song on this album cannot do it justice because the entire thing unfolds like a story. All the songs transit so well into each other that if you skipped any of them, something would seem missing. Then there are the additions of the noise tracks scattered through the album, and noise bits at the ends of songs. Topping off the CD with a jazzy track and a piano track, you'll get your chance to rest after nine tracks of grind madness and feel pumped to listen to more. You may even forget just how crazy what you were listening to was as you're winding down.

There's a lot of replay value in this record. It's the kind of thing I could listen to over and over again and not get sick of it. If you want diversity from one band without having to make a mix CD, I strongly suggest picking this up.

Song summaries include...

Hay Is For Horses - It serves well as an opener, not the best song on the CD but you can get into it from here. Good use of double bass. B+

I Saw The Saturday Night Sky Over 195 Explode - Sounds pretty similar to the last song. However, I like the title because I know which Route 195 they're talking about. B

I've Run Over Black Cats That Were Luckier Than Me - Lots of quiet filler in this song. The noise of bells for the first 30 seconds. It's also the slowest song on here. Repetitive in the riffs at times. C

Hidden Noise Track #1 - After three tracks of hardcore grind madness, hearing this kind of thing is very relaxing. A

While Others Attend Chatrooms With Erections - This one comes at you full throttle. Great use of bass in the beginning. Interesting twist to stop and have slow drum stick clicks in the middle of the song. A

Feed The Scenesters to the Lions - The grind part of the song is kind of bland, but the end makes up for it with a quiet, relaxing riff put over a fitting drum beat. The vacuum cleaner sounds are a nice touch too. A-

Untitled One - I can feel the intensity in this one throughout the whole song. The riffs and the double bass in this song are immaculate. A+

Untitled Two - Short and spastic. Lots of background screaming in this one, too. It had to be done. B+

Sweet Merciful Crap - The riff about five seconds into this song is

kind of annoying, but the slow part at the end is pretty good. B-

Borderline Sarcasm - Sounds a bit disjointed, but I love the bass

riff that stands alone in this song. Lots of random picking on the

guitars. B

Hidden Noise Track #2 - I love it! Two and a half minutes of

relaxing jazzy sounds. Powerful, yet calming. It always feels like I'm watching snow fall at night when I listen to this. A+

Hidden Noise Track #3 - Just some quiet piano. A good way to end it, though the playing is nothing particularly special. B

Lamp's Rating: A
