The tunes exhibit mature influences ranging from Cheap Trick to the Beatles. Zonana's songwriting is polished and there's nothing about the home-studio production that would make a radio programmer wince. Whether he's writing about a love affair with an inflatable doll ("Bette"), the emotional fallout of 9/11 ("Fool on a Bicycle"), the fear of death ("Afraid of Dying"), or the death of a brother ("Joel's Song"), Zonana confronts each song's topic with penetrating honesty while avoiding heavy-handedness. Home-studio products rarely achieve this combination of sleek songwriting, tight arrangements, and soulful self-awareness.
