Much of the all-out noise experimentation which tops off Gravitar could be heard from any one of a number of experimental units, but there's a difference here -- underlying all of Gravitar's work is a jazzy groove of bass and live drums, around which all of the "noise" (which is derived not from the standard guitars and digital manipulations, but from vocals as well) is near-perfectly constructed. When the surface tones back off a bit, the band comes across as a tight, drony groove unit, and when the atmospheric noise hits its peak, the band comes across as a thoroughly experimental project; at its best, however, Gravitar links the surface with its droning backbeat so well that the sound is very much like an actual rock band, as heard through a dense, deep layer of fuzz. An excellent release for those who enjoy noisy ambience, but still desire some deep-down sense of structure.
