Take a little early XTC, a touch of the Clash and a dash of Pere Ubu and you might come close to Ballad Jazz Waltz by Roads to Space Travel. They negotiate tricky time signatures and tempo changes with the greatest of ease, and manage to just plain rock out while they do it. Despite playing in odd time, many of the tunes have an anthemic quality reminiscent of the Clash, with vocals that often recall a less manic David Thomas (Pere Ubu). While influences aren't that hard to pick out, nothing about Ballad Jazz Waltz sounds derivative. Compared with their self-titled debut, Ballad Jazz Waltz shows a far more cohesive sound, highlighted by interesting guitar tones and great songwriting. This album deserved to be heard by a lot more people, but Roads to Space Travel broke up shortly after the release of Ballad Jazz Waltz.
