Drummer Chris Cutler has always been willing to push music to its conceptual boundaries -- whether in an improvisational duo setting with the genius noise guitarist Fred Frith, or helping deconstruct pop music as an adjunct member of Pere Ubu, or with the Art Bears, or with Henry Cow. But with Twice Around the Earth he's left the realm of music completely and entered that of sound as cultural . As part of a grant-funded radio project, Cutler invited interested people around the world to make 30-minute recordings of ambient sound (conversations, traffic noise, impromptu on-the-street interviews, etc.) during the actual time of his radio broadcast and mail them in to him; he played them, unedited, during his 30-minute daily shift as a radio host. For this disc he put together two long distillations drawn from those recordings, titled &Twice Around the Earth& and &Blue Winter,& along with a shorter piece titled &Lux,& which was recorded entirely at a cafeteria table in the Luxembourg airport. As you might imagine, there's not much here in the way of musical content, but what the album does offer is a strangely fascinating kaleidoscope of noises; listen and follow along with the detailed liner notes and you end up getting a sense of a wide variety of different places and cultures that, obviously, one could never get from pictures.
