About the Artist
When Melba Moore released her tenth album Closer in July of 1980, the music industry was in a state of flux. Disco was declared dead by the mainstream and was beginning its metamorphosis into several sub-genres including boogie, house and hip hop while music executives grappled with an industry-wide recession caused by its own financial over-indulgence. Melba s previous offering, 1979 s sadly neglected Burn, saw the Tony award winning actress and singer embracing the then in vogue disco sounds, in particular the disco-rock fusion that Donna Summer had taken to the top of the charts with that year s Bad Girls album and had heralded Moore s songwriting debut, yet the album was not a commercial success perhaps due to the infamous anti-disco backlash that coincided with its release. But if you ve seen her 2009 episode of the TV ONE series Unsung or even read a few things about the ups and downs of her remarkable 45 years and counting career, you know one thing: Melba Moore is a survivor. Closer saw her reuniting with Philly soul titans Bruce Hawes and Victor Carstarphen (who produced and co-wrote five of the album s ten cuts) while also making her bow as a co-producer making it a remarkable transitional album in Moore s all too often undervalued discography.
