专辑介绍

by Lindsay Planer

Although they began as the Navarros, an R&B and surf cover band, the Neighb'rhood Childr'n developed a persona of part garage rockers and part pseudo-psychedelia once they headed south from their Oregon roots to join the blossoming Haight-Ashbury hippie scene in San Francisco. This self-titled LP was the only one that they issued, despite an impressive run of live gigs throughout the Bay Area with the likes of the Grass Roots, Iron Butterfly, and even the Who during one of their earliest U.S. tours. The dozen tracks on this platter were cut by the Childr'n circa the Summer of Love and issued on the miniscule Acta imprint. While they may have modeled themselves after the acid rock associated with the likes of the Jefferson Airplane, the Neighb'rhood Childr'n were more dependent on wailing fuzz guitars than actual instrumental virtuosity or exceptionally strong material. A few of Dyan Hoffman's (organ/tambourine/vocals) lead vocals are somewhat reminiscent of Grace Slick's work with the pre-Airplane Great Society -- especially on &Long Years in Space,& &Patterns,& and the quirky waltz &Happy Child.& However, even with an obvious homage to Frank Zappa's &Help, I'm a Rock,& &Chocolate Angel& comes off as little more than an exercise in excess -- right down to the Farfisa &Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star& break. Buried beneath the other manufactured-sounding psych is the R&B vibe on &Feeling Zero& and the frenetic &She's Got No Identification.& Interested parties should direct their respective attentions to Long Years in Space (1997) -- which doubles the running order of this LP with demos and alternate versions as well as previously unissued sides such as covers of the Beatles' &Can't Buy Me Love& and the Nightcrawlers' nugget &Little Black Egg.&
