Chan Marshall has always been fond of recording covers, and she usually makes some pretty odd choices. No surprise then that for this EP she summons Thurston Moore, Pavement, and Dead Moon. She keeps it relatively simple, too; the only arrangement she tinkers with is Steve Malkmus' on &We Dance.& Which is no trespass against the sacrosanct; she's always been good at drawing an entirely separate identity from songs the rock populace thought they had pegged for good. OK, that's all fine and good, but is that really why the morose elite turn to Cat Power? Nay -- it's the mood and the voice. That said, Marshall's alluring, mewling coo and reverb-laden electric guitar accompaniment bind this little record together nicely, making it a nice addition to any record collection.
