You can always count on DJ Icey for a good, solid set of funky breaks, and the Y4K series is a made-to-order venue for someone of his skills. So if there's anything disappointing about this album, it isn't that he doesn't bring the funk, but rather that he doesn't bring the funk in any particularly surprising or innovative ways. Still, DJ Icey's standard-issue material would rival that of any other breaks DJ on his best night, and this album won't disappoint his fans. Highlight tracks include the Drumattic Twins' &Feelin' Kinda Strange,& presented here in a remix by Bass Kleph and Nick Thayer that puts an emphasis on fun vocal manipulations over a thudding club beat; a grimy hip-hop track by General MIDI titled &Never Gonna Stop the Show&; and the brilliant &Grizzle& by Smithmonger & Kobe, presented here in an über-funky remix by Vlad/Ardisson. DJ Icey offers several tracks of original material along with the well-selected singles from other artists, and they stand up well to the competition. Very nice.
