专辑介绍

by François Couture

Armed Observation marked the beginning of a long and faithful relationship between Doctor Nerve and Cuneiform Records. This was Nerve's second album (Out to Bomb Fresh Kings was released in 1985 on Nick Didkovsky's own Punos Music), but with the band having found its record label and settling on reliable personnel, one can be tempted to consider Armed Observation as the true first Doctor Nerve album. The band had crystallized around guitarist (electric) Didkovsky, saxophonist Yves Duboin, bass clarinetist Michael Lytle, drummer James Mussen, vibraphonist Marc Wagnon, and a trumpeter who would go on to have a fabulous jazz career: Dave Douglas. All of them except Douglas had contributed to Out to Bomb Fresh Kings. With a record company backing the album and Fred Frith sharing production credits with Didkovsky, the sound quality of this release is much better.

Armed Observation loses the jazzier numbers of the first album and concentrates on the more complex material while shortening the average track length. The album opens on a thunderous angular rock number, "Out to Bomb Fresh Kings," which initiates a series of song titles taking up the previous album's title. This track, along with "Sister Cancer Brother Dollar," "I Am Not Dumb Now," and "Wir Sind Dickhauter," all exhausting speed-driven numbers, will become high points of the band's live performance for years to come. But Armed Observation also introduces the more "contemporary composition" side of Nick Didkovsky in the form of his "Three Curiously Insubstantial Duets." This avenue will be more thoroughly explored on later albums.
