This is a particularly well-balanced set with pianist Dave Brubeck (then 73) in typically creative form. Although Brubeck (who is accompanied throughout by bassist Jack Six and drummer Randy Jones) is actually the real star of every selection (coming up with continually inventive ideas whether in ensembles, behind soloists or during his own solos), he is joined by three of his favorite horn players on some of the numbers. Bobby Militello shows a great deal of versatility with some blazing alto on &Yesterdays,& melodic playing in a Paul Desmond vein on &I Can't Give You Anything but Love,& soulful tenor on &Travelin' Blues& and plenty of intensity on &Knives.& Clarinetist Bill Smith is well featured on &You Go to My Head& and the boisterous bass trombone of Chris Burbeck makes several welcome appearances. This recommended set has more than its share of variety and surprising moments.
