Minimal sound artist Richard Chartier conceived Series as the inaugural release on his LINE label, a subdivision of Taylor Deupree's 12k. Like the many successive releases by such artists as Immedia, Miki Yui, Bernhard Günter, and Steve Roden, Series uses silence as much as it does sound to mold the digital compositions. After all, the hushed sounds Chartier uses to craft his songs are nearly silent. Furthermore, he uses actual sounds sparingly -- there is arguably more silence on this album than there is actual sound. But this is all part of Chartier's approach: treat silence as a sound, making it just as much a part of his palette as the high-frequency glitches that he favors. Overall, Series sets a precedent for the LINE label. More importantly, though, it challenges you. For instance, don't be surprised upon an initial listen if you begin questioning if this album is more style than substance -- since there is barely any substance but rather empty silence. Regardless of your conclusion, you must commend Chartier for inaugurating his label with such a remarkable album. It's just as easy to dismiss Series as highbrow digital-age rhetoric that is ultimately void of substance as it is to champion the album as visionary. This is partly what makes the album so remarkable, if not brave and visionary as well.
