This is one of the most important of the early landmarks in the contemporary tradition of solo saxophone. Only Anthony Braxton's For Alto was more important.

Roscoe Mitchell's early solo work is very different from AB's. From his first CD, Sound, RM was an architect of silence as well as music. AB is all kinetic intelligence, RM's intellect works in the patient unfolding of his ideas. AB, ironically enough, is the jazzier of the two. From the beginning I think RM was more at home in something like the contemporary classical tradition. The best way to think about both of them is that they both, in their unique ways, transcended any genre, school or traditions.

What we have here are recordings from three solo concerts that RM gave in the very early 1970s. He plays soprano, alto, tenor and bass saxophones. The pieces include a very early version of Noonah, a piece that RM has reimagined many times in his career. For me the best pieces are the two parts of Eeltwo which he performs on tenor. It is easy to hear just how accomplished a saxophonist he is on these pieces. He jumps from the bottom to the altissimo register of the horn with such quiet ease.

I will not claim that this is my favorite solo RM album. That honor belongs to some of his work on a album that he put out soon after this one called Noonah. I am also very fond of his stuff on the recent Solo 3.

But this was the first solo album I had of his, it presented a real alternative to the solo work of AB and I remain fond of it. If you are new to RM you might want to start with something like his Sound Ensemble CDs (I love Snurdy McGurdy and Her Dancin' Shoes) or the Solo 3 CD. In any case, you are about to discover one of the most individual musicans of the last 50 years.
