The only recording by Jack DeJohnette\'s Special Edition to use a trumpeter (guest Baikida Carroll), this is a particularly strong outing by the 1982 edition of the group. With Chico Freeman (on tenor, bass clarinet and soprano), John Purcell (alto, flutes and baritone), bassist Rufus Reid and the leader-drummer (who also contributes some piano), it is not surprising that the music is adventurous yet quite coherent, with the solo and group statements being both spontaneous and logical. Recommended.
