专辑介绍

by Joshua Glazer

Not letting the heat from David Harness' first Heartbeat installment cool, Loveslap immediately brings a follow-up disc from S.F. deep house fave Julius Papp. Papp himself knows that the Loveslap tag means he's playing right into his fan base with the opener, as Marlon D's &UC Anthem& asks &What is the underground?& while the snapping hi-hats and light key pulse answer the rhetorical question. From there, Papp continues to flow through an upbeat set of vocal faves by So What and Passionardor before going back below, where Quentin Harris does his minimal dance of warped bass and stumbling keys. Pete Heller edits down the uplifting &Sandcastles,& which allows for a bigger build on Deep Sensation's &Somewhere Somehow,& complete with disco bombast and an Isaac Hayes vocal lift. The back half of the disc is less riveting, with Papp ignoring the potential for one more dramatic arc of songs. Instead, he lets church-flavored Louis Benedetti, the equally R&B-tinged Deborah Bond, and gospel-shouting Connie Harvey bring the train into the station (with an abrupt final stop). Though not as astounding as some of Papp's better mixes (his vintage Go Deep With Julius Papp title still stands as his crowning achievement), anyone swept up in house fever will savor this Loveslap as much as the last.
