by Tony Wilds The New Rhythms of the South may as well have been titled "The New Hits of Xavier Cugat ." It bears a strong resemblance to Cugat's first two albums in the Mercury Perfect Presence Sound series. An improvement over Ros' best-selling, first Rhythms of the South album, New Rhythms really gets going on side two, with a solid set including three out of four Lecuona covers. (For a bolero, "Jungle Drums" is awfully bombastic.) Highlights are "Yours" and the only new number, "Latin Shalom," a baion.
