by Scott Yanow Along with his regular quintet sets, pianist George Shearing recorded a series of easy-listening mood music records in the 1960s. This set of pretty music features the Shearing quintet (which probably also included guitarist Ron Anthony and possibly vibraphonist Gary Burton at the time) surrounded and sometimes buried by a large string section. While Milt Raskin did the conducting, Shearing was responsible for the arrangements. Best is a touching version of "Sunday, Monday or Always"; other songs include "The Blue Room," "You're Blasé," "Try a Little Tenderness" and "Be Careful It's My Heart." Actually, for this type of "dreamy" romantic music, the performances are excellent, but one should not expect much jazz on this out-of-print LP.
