Sonny James could crank out a product as consistently and lucratively as the United States Mint. On the downside, a uniformity of style and content settled over his albums in the mid-'60s and stayed with him, with few exceptions, for the rest of his career. James' music is almost always formulaic, but his 1965 album Behind the Tear suffers from an oppressive sameness of tone that is deeper and more abiding than usual. &Behind the Tear& was a huge hit for James, and this album's recording of &I'll Never Find Another You& also become a country chart-topper when released as a single, but not until two years later! James wasn't devoting as much energy to covering oldies in 1965 as he did in later years, so Behind the Tear has a mixture of originals and songs by professional songwriters, nearly all of which are ballads with practically identical arrangements. James had a knack for giving his fans exactly what they wanted, but in this case that means no surprises whatsoever.
