Tabakov is not well known in the US but in his native Bulgaria and Eastern Europe, he is an admired musician. You might call him a Bulgarian version of Leonard Bernstein since Tabakov is noted as a composer and writer, orchestral builder and teacher. He's the real deal and eminently qualified for taking on Mahler's symphonies.
These interpretations are honest, well thought out, and free from exaggerations. I cannot stress the honesty of the music making. The Sofia Philharmonic plays very well though there are numerous stretches where their abilities are quite simply taxed. This is understandable; they are not a first rate, international ensemble like the ones found in the major cities of the US and Europe. However, the listener will derive great enjoyment from this box. Tabakov and the Sofia orchestra are old partners and the musicians fully understand his conception of Mahler-this is sooo important! I purchased this set for $18.99 and it was well worth the modest asking price.
