by Scott Yanow Vocalist-pianist Shirley Horn's earliest recording, this live performance (during a time when Miles Davis was championing her) predates Horn's first studio date by two years. The playing time is a bit brief (33 & 1/2 minutes) and the recording quality is just decent but it finds Horn already playing and singing in a recognizable style. Although there are a couple of medium-tempo numbers, the emphasis as usual is on ballads; an instrumental version of "'Round Midnight" gives the historic set (a trio outing with bassist John Mixon and drummer Gene Gammage ) some variety.
