Herbie Mann是自Eric Dolphy以降，另外一位以长笛手出现的爵士艺人，早年以中音萨克斯风及低音黑管面世，由于他的吹奏法与 Lester Young有异曲同工之妙，因此世人亦曾将Mann归类为「酷」派乐手。Herbie Mann的成功源自六十年代中期，1956年 Mann于法国及非洲十五个国家演出，并开始涉足如Bossa Nova及少数民族音乐的范畴，致使他开拓了日后于融合乐上的灵感泉源。六十年代初期他的畅销曲目「Coming Home Baby」，就是一首他尝试大型弦乐伴奏的一首名曲。这位音乐变色龙，并未因为某一音乐型式的成功而坚守原地，1964年他再度拿起萨克斯风，于Village Gate作现场录音演出，「Herbie Mann At The Village Gate」于是便成为就算是死忠爵士乐迷都大为称道的杰出经典。1968年，他的另一张专辑「Memphis Underground」再创销售奇迹之后，Mann便开始他的混和乐，甚至流行音乐的创作演出，多首出人意表的雷鬼及Disco作品，更成为当时的舞池热门曲。

A slightly expanded version of flutist Herbie Mann's 1961-62 group performs African-, Cuban- and Brazilian-influenced jazz on this appealing LP. With guitarist Billy Bean, vibraphonist Hagood Hardy, Dave Pike on marimba and four percussionists in the backup group, Mann's flute is well featured on tunes ranging from his own "B.N. Blues" and the standard "Brazil" to "One Note Samba." This album will be difficult to find but is worth the search.
