In 1949, swing bandleader Jimmy Dorsey often revisited his roots, taking a small group out of his orchestra and playing heated Dixieland. &The Original Dorseyland Jazz Band& is featured during eight standards on this 10& LP; some of the contents have been reissued since. Dorsey (sticking to clarinet) is heard sharing the frontline with trumpeter Charlie Teagarden, trombonist Cutty Cutshall and tenor saxophonist Frank Maynes. The four-piece rhythm section (pianist Dick Cary, guitarist Carl Kress, bassist Bill Lolatte, and drummer Ray Bauduc) keeps the music swinging. The performances (highlighted by &Jazz Me Blues,& &Panama,& &Struttin' With Some Barbecue,& and &South Rampart Street Parade&) are often high-powered and are consistently exciting, with JD clearly enjoying playing in this freewheeling setting.
