The fiddle is heavy, the voice is distinctive, and the Benny Martin/Jim Denny tune &Each Day& starts off this compilation of music from Kitty Wells' past releases on Decca Records. There's a beautiful black-and-white of the younger Wells on the back cover, while an older color photo of the star sitting on a white fence in a pink polka dot dress adorns the front of the Country Heart album. Cindy Walker's &Dancing With a Stranger& and Johnny Master's &Stubborn Heart& show Wells at the peak of her powers, the voice full and vibrant gliding over precise arrangements. The entire album is in &simulated stereo& but, thankfully, it still sounds like mono and the label didn't ruin the beauty of the original tracks. Ray Crisp joins in on the vocals for &Broken Marriage Vows,& but it's only for the chorus, as the &Queen of Country Music& stays center stage where she belongs. There's a beautiful rendition of the Fred Rose/Hank Williams tune &A Mansion on the Hill,& and all ten songs are strong examples of the singer's work, though the album could have been a bit more informative -- there's no mention of who the musicians are or from which albums this music was compiled. Still, hearing Wells performing &Beside You& is a treat, and you don't need the flowery liner notes that are here to enjoy it. As a collection of ten topnotch performances by Kitty Wells, Country Heart works.
