Starwalker's Losers Can Win is a debut EP but it's far from a first effort. The group is made of Jean-Benoit Dunckel of electronic pop royalty Air and Bardi Johannsson, the man behind the little-known but long-standing Icelandic experimental group Bang Gang. Considering their pedigree, it shouldn't be surprising that the group makes a brand of electronica most readily described as ethereal but accessible. The laid-back vibe and simple (verging on simplistic) lyrics make for easy listening but the near perfect melodies and the sleek production provide some decent replay value.
On the title track Dunckel sings, "no need to show off with your guitar / one single note will get you far," a sentiment that seems to be Starwalker's credo. The rhythms of this album are simple to the point of monotony, but it's more hypnotic than boring. Losers Can Win is the kind of music that's generally uninteresting but Dunckel and Johannsson's years of work in the genre give them the technical chops to pull it off. There's a little too much going on in the songs to classify them as minimalist but they definitely tend towards sparseness. "Moral Sex," the EP's lone instrumental, sounds like a wordless lullaby.
Equally minimalistic, but in a more disappointing fashion, is the amount of music on the record. It's only five songs, which is standard for an EP, but one of them is a remix and the other is just a redo. The remix of "Bad Weather" comes from Bloodgroup and is dancier but doesn't take the song anywhere that it didn't suggest itself. "Losers Can Win (All That You've Got)" basically the same song as plain old "Losers Can Win." It's a little darker and moodier but the melody and lyrics are exactly the same. The distinction doesn't seem to justify a song of its own; it seems more like laziness. Due to how straightforward and repetitive both tracks are, "Losers Can Win (All That You've Got)" is the one place that Dunckel and Johannsson's natural talent is just totally unable to carry the music and the EP starts to sag.
For an ordinary pair of musicians making their first record together, Losers Can Win would be a pretty promising debut. But Dunckel and Johannsson have both been making music for years, and in Starwalker, they bring out each other’s laziest tendencies. Fans of Air will enjoy hearing Dunckel's lazy croon again and fans of Bang Gang should just be happy that Johannsson's finally getting some recognition.
