A year before his death, his creative powers were quite undimished, although he had lost his sight. nevertheless, he left the Art of Fugue unfinished and gave no information about the instrument upon which it shoul be performed. Everyhting points however to its having been intended for the keyboard. In Bach's hands, this practical textbook is transformed into a poem entirely imbued with mystery and pure beauty. On the threshold of eternity, the great master who was born in a century of beauty and submission to divine law, produced a work of transcendental quality.
